Sustainability Meets Tradition: Pemcas' Innovative Approach to Slane Whiskey Distillery
Introduction to Pemcas and the Project
Pemcas has long been synonymous with innovative engineering solutions, particularly when it comes to challenging projects that blend tradition with cutting-edge technology. One of their most notable projects to date involves transforming a protected historic structure into a modern whiskey distillery. This venture not only required a delicate touch to preserve the integrity of the historical architecture but also demanded the integration of modern technology to meet today's distilling needs.
Technological Innovations: 3D Modelling and Design
The cornerstone of Pemcas' approach was the use of advanced 3D modelling to reimagine the space within the old structure. By creating detailed digital replicas of the distillery, engineers were able to meticulously plan out where each piece of equipment should be placed. This precision planning was crucial in ensuring that all elements—ranging from large distilling tanks to intricate piping—fit seamlessly within the existing framework. Early detection of potential design clashes through these models allowed for adjustments before physical construction began, saving time and reducing costs significantly. Additionally, 3D modelling facilitated the precise specification of components to be manufactured off-site, ensuring a perfect fit upon installation.
Enhanced Safety Measures: Installing Advanced Systems
Recognising the importance of safety and business continuity, Pemcas installed a state-of-the-art sprinkler and deluge system within the distillery. These systems are crucial for preventing and mitigating fire risks in environments that handle highly flammable substances like alcohol. The installation not only protects the historic structure and the valuable equipment within but also ensures that the distillery operations can continue unhindered in the event of a fire, safeguarding both investment and heritage.
Sustainable Practices in Distillery Operations
As sustainability was a key focus in the project, we implemented a system to collect and store rainwater, which is now used in various distilling processes. This not only reduces the distillery's dependence on local water supplies but also minimises its environmental footprint. Furthermore, the design and installation of a salmon ladder in the adjacent river demonstrated the clients commitment to local wildlife conservation. This feature ensures that the distillery operations do not disrupt the natural migration patterns of salmon, a critical aspect of local biodiversity.
Services we provided on the project
Design & Project Management of Distillery design (malt, pot still & grain) including defining requirements and procuring specialist vendor bids for all process equipment including grain handling, milling, mashing & fermentation, distillation and truck filling/casking.
Design of all distillery utility requirements and mechanical & electrical installations to facilitate start up and commissioning of the distillery.
Conclusion: Marrying Tradition with Modernity
This project is a prime example of how traditional industries like whiskey distilling can benefit from modern engineering and sustainable practices. Through thoughtful design, innovative technology, and a commitment to sustainability, the existing listed building was preserved for future generations by way of being given a new lease of life as a whiskey distillery.
The distillery now serves as a landmark in both the landscape and in the whiskey production industry, proving that with the right approach built heritage in Ireland can be protected for future generations by being suitably repurposed.
